Shropshire Listed
Building Surveyors

Our services: Listed Building Surveys

With our office conveniently situated on the Welsh border. We often undertake Building Surveys across the entire county and beyond. With the benefit of many years’ experience inspecting a wide range of property types in Shropshire, we appreciate that the county contains quite distinct architectural styles and types of construction that all require specific knowledge and different surveying approaches.

Shropshire is a county of contrasts both in landscape and architecture. To the West and South, timber is often the predominant building material. Whilst in the North and East, brick and stone are more common. When driving through Shropshire especially along the Welsh border there is a sense that not much has really changed over the centuries. Many small villages and hamlets have mostly escaped the rural gentrification that has undermined the local distinctiveness of other counties.

Weatherboard clad timber frame barn conversion common in parts of Shropshire

Many of our clients have spent years searching for their perfect rural retreat, which can be anything from a large country house in grand decline, or a picturesque cottage or barn in need of some TLC. The obvious excitement and appeal of owning such a property often blinds buyers to the potential problems and financial commitment that ownership can entail. Investing in a Building Survey ensures you enter this love affair with your eyes wide open and avoid any nasty surprises.

The quality and condition of timber frame buildings in Shropshire varies tremendously. At the top of the tree, there are the well-known buildings such as the Feathers in Ludlow, Butcher Row in Shrewsbury and Bishop Percy’s House in Bridgenorth. These gems are vastly outnumbered by the more humble country buildings. Many of these cottages and farmhouses superficially appear sound, but serious problems can lurk underneath their characteristic black and white paint job.

In certain parts of the county, stone roofs are the norm. These are arguably some of the most common in the county, with their random width slates and diminishing courses. They are the stuff of dreams for anyone looking for a period property in Shropshire. Whilst the slates are usually in acceptable condition, seemingly minor and often subtle defects across the roof can indicate a widespread failure of the fixings. Re-roofing, even for fairly modest size properties can run into tens of thousands of pounds so it is important to make sure you commission a Building Survey for this type of property.
